I was told a story by a trio of early CMC student leaders, John Devereux ‘57, Bill Van Horn ‘58, and Fred Hayward ‘58. After graduating from Santa Barbara High School in 1954, Fred asked his friend Bill if he could ride with him to Claremont as both boys had been accepted at CMC. Bill, an accomplished athlete, explained he was required to report two weeks before the start of classes for pre season football practices. Fred, although an avid sailor, hadn’t played football in high school. Undeterred, and ready for an adventure, Fred joined Bill for the grueling two a day practice sessions under the August sun. Their first game was vs Chino Institute, a team of prison inmates. Bill Van Horn starred as a two way player on the combined Pomona-Claremont team and was eventually inducted into the CMS Hall of Fame. Fred Hayward’s football career was less luminary, however he became CMC Student Body President in 1958 and won the prestigious Sir Thomas Lipton yacht sailing trophy against world class competition including Dennis Connor who skippered in the Olympics and several America’s Cup events.
