We were asked to share our graduation memories. Commencement for the class of 1978 began with the playing of Copland’s “Fanfare for the Common Man.” We graduates that year were certainly all capable, but not the superstars that the college has successfully attracted, thanks to coeducation and its growing prominence among educational institutions. Rather, we were reasonably intelligent, middle-class men (and women!) who worked very hard and succeeded, and I thought that musical selection was absolutely appropriate.
